L-Tryptophan and Ketamine Therapy | Tovani Health

Tryptophan (L-Tryptophan)Serotonin precursor (OTC supplement)

Verdict at Tovani Health

Fully compatible at typical OTC doses; same as 5-HTP framing.

L-Tryptophan and ketamine have no clinically significant interaction. Tryptophan is the upstream amino acid precursor to serotonin. The serotonin syndrome concern is when high-dose tryptophan is combined with prescription serotonergic agents, not when it's combined with ketamine alone.

If you take Tryptophan regularly and are considering at-home ketamine therapy, the combination is generally safe at therapeutic doses. This page covers the brief pharmacologic context and what we do at intake.

How Tryptophan interacts with ketamine

Tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP and then to serotonin. High-dose supplements (1-5 g/day) can meaningfully raise serotonin synthesis. Ketamine itself does not meaningfully raise serotonin.

What we do at intake

Disclose dose, brand, and frequency. Do not combine high-dose tryptophan with prescription SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs without your prescriber's awareness.

Bottom line

L-Tryptophan and ketamine have no clinically significant interaction. Tryptophan is the upstream amino acid precursor to serotonin. The serotonin syndrome concern is when high-dose tryptophan is combined with prescription serotonergic agents, not when it's combined with ketamine alone.
