Saffron and Ketamine Therapy | Tovani Health

Crocus sativus (Saffron) (also: Affron)Herbal antidepressant

Verdict at Tovani Health

Fully compatible; the serotonergic concern is with prescription drug combinations.

Saffron and ketamine have no clinically significant interaction. Multiple small trials show modest antidepressant effects comparable to low-dose SSRIs. The serotonin syndrome concern matters when saffron is combined with prescription serotonergic agents, not with ketamine specifically (ketamine isn't meaningfully serotonergic).

If you take Crocus sativus regularly and are considering at-home ketamine therapy, the combination is generally safe at therapeutic doses. This page covers the brief pharmacologic context and what we do at intake.

How Crocus sativus interacts with ketamine

Saffron's crocin and safranal compounds appear to inhibit reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Combination with prescription serotonergic agents raises real SS risk; with ketamine alone the risk is theoretical.

What we do at intake

Disclose dose, brand, and reason for use. Don't start saffron during active SSRI therapy without your prescriber's awareness.

Saffron and ketamine have no clinically significant interaction. Multiple small trials show modest antidepressant effects comparable to low-dose SSRIs.
