GABA Supplements and Ketamine Therapy | Tovani Health
GABA supplement (GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)) (also: PharmaGABA) — Inhibitory neurotransmitter (oral supplement — poor BBB penetration)
Verdict at Tovani Health
Fully compatible — oral GABA doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier meaningfully, so the central effect is mostly placebo.
Oral GABA supplements and ketamine have no clinically significant interaction. Despite being marketed for anxiety and sleep, oral GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly (the supplemented molecule, that is — endogenous brain GABA is synthesized in situ from glutamate). Any anxiolytic effect from oral GABA is largely peripheral (gut-brain axis, enteric nervous system) and at small magnitudes, mostly placebo. For the more credible 'calm' supplement option, see our L-theanine page. No real pharmacological stacking with ketamine.
If you take GABA supplement regularly and are considering at-home ketamine therapy, the combination is generally safe at therapeutic doses. This page covers the brief pharmacologic context and what we do at intake.
How GABA supplement interacts with ketamine
GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. Oral GABA supplements cross the BBB inefficiently (debated; small studies suggest minimal central effect). Any sleep/anxiety benefit is likely peripheral or placebo-mediated. No CYP interaction with ketamine.
What we do at intake
Continue if you find it helpful. Consider L-theanine as the better-evidence option for calm.
