Prednisone and Ketamine Therapy | Tovani Health
Deltasone (Prednisone) — Oral corticosteroid
Verdict at Tovani Health
Compatible; the steroid-side mood effects and BP elevation are what we plan around.
Prednisone and ketamine are compatible. Two practical considerations: prednisone can cause mood lability, agitation, or insomnia in its own right, which can complicate distinguishing session-related effects from medication side effects; and chronic high-dose steroids can raise BP, which stacks with ketamine's transient pressor response.
If you take Deltasone regularly and are considering at-home ketamine therapy, the combination is safe with monitoring or dose adjustment. This page covers the brief pharmacologic context and what we do at intake.
How Deltasone interacts with ketamine
Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with broad anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Independent psychiatric effects (steroid-induced mood disorders) are well documented at higher doses or longer courses. No direct ketamine PK interaction.
What we do at intake
Disclose dose, duration, and indication (asthma flare, autoimmune, post-transplant, etc.). Short bursts (5-10 days) are minor; chronic therapy (>3 months) warrants more careful baseline mood and BP documentation.
Bottom line
Prednisone and ketamine are compatible. Two practical considerations: prednisone can cause mood lability, agitation, or insomnia in its own right, which can complicate distinguishing session-related effects from medication side effects; and chronic high-dose steroids can raise BP, which stacks with ketamine's transient pressor response.
